Hurricane Recovery: How to Help

September 12th, 2017

In response to the devastation brought by both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, several of our donors have asked how to best support relief efforts.

Community foundations are uniquely qualified to collect and mobilize dollars locally to respond to disasters in their own communities. Several have set up funds that allow you to make donations with confidence that they will be used efficiently and responsibly.

Hurricane Harvey

The Greater Houston Community Foundation is leading the effort to connect donors with the right, legitimate agencies in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The mayor of Houston set up a relief fund at the Community Foundation there that will be covering short-term and long-term needs in Houston and throughout southeast Texas.

Hurricane Irma

The Miami Foundation is collecting donations to support relief efforts in both Florida and the Caribbean islands devastated by Hurricane Irma. Additionally, the Miami Foundation offers a list of service agencies assisting with relief efforts in South Florida.

The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and the Pinellas Community Foundation in Clearwater have partnered with several United Way affiliates to set up The Tampa Bay Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund to address recovery efforts in Central Florida. 100% of the funds collected through this effort will be directed to address immediate and mid- to long-term recovery needs through grants to select nonprofits
