Gayle S. Rose and other private donors collaborate to offer free "Selma" admission
Local philanthropist Gayle S. Rose has joined with Mayor A C Wharton and Harold Ford, Jr. to lead fundraising efforts to enable 10,000 seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students to see the movie “Selma” free of charge. Citizens including Memphis Light, Gas and Water official and Community Foundation Board member Gale Jones Carson and former City Council member TaJuan Stout Mitchell are leading efforts to organize transportation to see the film. Students can obtain free tickets beginning Jan. 15 by showing a report card or student ID at three Malco locations: the Paradiso, the Majestic or Southaven theater. Groups that want to bring students should call Malco at (901) 761-3480.
The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis is accepting donations that would allow more students to see the film. Click here to donate to the Selma Student Fund or mail contributions to the Selma Student Fund, 1900 Union Ave., Memphis, TN 38104.
