JIFF

Justice - Unfunded Finalist

Juvenile Intervention and Faith-based Follow-up's (JIFF) mission is to break the destructive cycle of juvenile crime through Christ-centered intervention. JIFF receives referrals from Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Court to provide community-based alternatives to detention for court-involved youth in Memphis's highest crime-ridden communities. Unfortunately, a disproportionate number of minorities are arrested, convicted, and incarcerated in our juvenile and criminal justice systems, an injustice known as Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC). JIFF believes that diverting more youth to its community-based detention alternatives equates to the de-institutionalization of African American and Latino youth and provides these youth opportunities to overcome structural oppression and receive equal and fair treatment through wrap-around services in their communities. The Court’s community partnership with JIFF has effectively reduced our city's detention center population without compromising public safety.

JIFF hires program managers and case mentors who were formerly involved in the juvenile and criminal justice systems to work with its court-involved youth, providing purposeful employment and leadership opportunities to former justice and gang-involved individuals who subsequently impact youth heading down similar paths. In 2017, the organization served 115 justice-involved youth through its Case Mentoring program. However, based on juvenile court data, additional eligible youth living in its catchment area did not receive programming due to staffing limitations. Once all eligible youth in JIFF's current zip codes can be served, the organization wants to expand and replicate its Case Mentoring model county wide. In order to expand and serve more youth, the organization seeks funds to support additional staffing needs.
