Girls Inc.

Poverty - Unfunded Finalist

Girls Inc. of Memphis reduces poverty in our city by leading 1,000 girls a year through the process of developing academic proficiency, personal resilience, and the life skills needed for independent living, all while avoiding traditional poverty traps associated with lack of education, substance abuse, and pregnancy. The organization is changing the status quo and breaking the poverty cycle at the root by equipping girls to achieve academically, establish goals and aspirations, and build the skills to sustain a successful adulthood.

Girls Inc. is seeking funding to support its Eureka! program, a five-year, STEM-based program for girls in grades 8 through 12. Eureka! is designed to broaden and support girls’ educational and career aspirations, particularly encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The organization’s goal for 2019 is to create a pipeline for the Eureka! program by providing STEM-focused curricula in Shelby County middle schools for 6th and 7th-grade girls, a critical age to build and maintain girls’ confidence levels. With age appropriate, hands-on curricula at the beginning of middle school, Girls Inc. will set the groundwork for more girls to be part of its five-year Eureka! program. After participating in the program, more than 90% of Girls Inc. graduating seniors head to college interested in pursuing degrees in STEM-related fields. By providing the Girls Inc. experience with an intentional focus on STEM, Eureka! equips girls with the skills, knowledge, and abilities to increase their capacity to earn an equitable and sustainable salary with higher earning potential, thus breaking the cycle of poverty and economic challenges that they and their families face.
