In 2016, the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis embarked on an innovative initiative called Beyond the Classroom to strengthen organizations serving PreK-12 students in Memphis during their out-of-school time. We believe that the way to better outcomes for our kids is to help the organizations that serve them measure and maximize the impact of their programs.
Phases I and II of the initiative showed promising results for a total of nine youth-serving nonprofit organizations. We and our partner, Seeding Success, will leverage these successes in Phase III to ultimately scale Beyond the Classroom citywide.
In Phase II, which aligned with the 2018-19 school year, our partner Seeding Success worked with four out-of-school-time organizations: BRIDGES, Emmanuel Center, Girls Inc., and Memphis Athletic Ministries. We launched Phase I, conducted over the 2016-17 school year, with five diverse, youth-serving organizations. Participating nonprofits demonstrated population-level improvement in kindergarten readiness and program-level improvements in reducing summer learning loss and chronic absenteeism.
