Healthy Eating, Active Living

The goal of the Healthy Eating, Active Living program is to improve the health of our community by making it easier for Memphians to walk and bike and to find nutritious food more easily. When the Community Foundation learned that national grant funds were available for this purpose, we brought together The Assisi Foundation, the Plough Foundation and the United Way of the Mid-South to pursue a grant.

The four organizations collectively contributed $70,000 and received a $35,000 match from national foundations through the Convergence Partnership of the Tides Foundation. In the spring of 2010, Healthy Eating, Active Living awarded two grants: $65,000 over two years to Livable Memphis to develop more places to walk and bike, and $35,000 to the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center to develop a food policy council through its GrowMemphis program, which has since incorporated as a separate nonprofit organization.
