What is a community foundation?

A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people of a particular geographical region to improve the quality of life of its residents through lasting charitable giving.

The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis is politically independent and nonsectarian. We serve the entire community by raising, managing, and distributing funds for many different charitable purposes.

We are governed by a volunteer Board of Governors chosen from our community. Our daily operations are carried out by a professional staff of 14 employees.

Since 1969, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $350 million in grants. In our most recent fiscal year, we awarded more than $36 million in grants. Most of that money was granted through our 1,000 charitable funds created by individuals, families, organizations, companies, other nonprofits and groups.
