Capacity Building Grants
The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis seeks to address the organizational strength and overall health of nonprofits in the Mid-South by supporting their capacity-building efforts. Capacity building refers to activities that strengthen the ability of a nonprofit to achieve greater performance and impact.
Approximately $150,000 is available for this grant pool. Grants typically range from $5,500 to $40,000. Most grants are in the $20,000 to $25,000 range.
Eligible Requests
Funding will be provided for two types of requests:
1. Capacity-building projects that will increase an organizations efficiency and effectiveness, for organizations of any size.
2. Core operating costs for small or emerging organizations, operating budget of $300,000 or less (not including pass-through funding for contracts, federal grants, etc.). This is intended to support small organizations operating with minimal staff.
Multi-year requests of up to three years will be considered.
Funding decisions will be based on the following criteria: - Funding will be provided to strengthen nonprofit organizations that have been in existence for three years or longer.
- Funding will be provided only to organizations that provide vital services in the community. Applicants must have stable, demonstrated board and staff leadership.
- Funding will be provided only to organizations that have completed a recent strategic plan (within the last three years), with evidence that staff, board and other stakeholders (if applicable) were involved in the process. The strategic plan, as opposed to a business plan, should have a multi-year focus addressing the whole organization and not simply one program or project.
- All Capacity Building grants require the recipient organization to raise matching funds ($1 for every $1, or other amount set by the committee), thereby encouraging the grantee to use our grant to leverage resources from other donors and grantors.
Ineligible Requests
Individuals, for-profit entities, private foundations and faith-based organizations whose project does not address a social issue other than religion are not eligible for funding.
Funding will not be provided to expand existing programs or create new ones, for brick-and-mortar projects or endowments.
