The
People's Philanthropy
A community foundation is a collection of charitable funds
established by individuals, families and organizations. Through a community foundation,
donors are able to maximize charitable gifts during their lifetimes and to provide
perpetual gifts through endowments. The funds established by donors provide grants for
hundreds of diverse charitable organizations.
In legal
terms, a community foundation is a tax-exempt, publicly supported foundation governed by
its own board of directors and created to serve a specific geographical area. The first
community foundation was created in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914. Today, there are more than
600 community foundations in the United States with assets of more than $25 billion.
Create a Lasting Legacy
More than 800 individuals, businesses and
institutions have chosen to invest in the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis by
creating living legacies that become part of a permanent, growing endowment for our
community's changing needs. The reasons vary. Some donors create funds initially to take
advantage of the most favorable tax savings allowed by law. Others do so out of passion
for a particular social interest or cause. Still others become a part of the Foundation
family because they recognize the economy and efficiency it represents in helping them
achieve their overall charitable objectives. More detail on Becoming

Enjoy Immediate Returns
Community Foundation donors receive a wide range of benefits
that are flexible and cost-effective. Contributions to your fund allow you to take an
immediate tax deduction the year in which the gift is made, including any carry forward.
Because most Foundation funds are pooled for investment purposes, donors have the
additional advantage of having their funds be part of an actively managed, diversified
investment portfolio. More detail on Investment Options and

Invest in Our Community's Future
Through broad involvement of community leaders and a
committed staff, the Community Foundation continually assesses current and emerging

Greater Memphis are used to invest in the ideas and abilities of individuals and groups
who want to take the lead in improving their own communities in east Arkansas, north
Mississippi and west Tennessee. Program staff is also available to consult with donors who
