Available Scholarships - 2013

These 17 scholarships are for students who intend to enroll in a two- or four-year program at an accredited institution. Deadlines, criteria, and applications are below. Review a list of the 2012 scholarship recipients.

  • Mildred Galloway Scholarship Fund was established for graduating high school seniors whose study is in the area of family and consumer sciences. Past awards: $1,500. Download the application.

  • Abell Family String Scholarship Fund offers a scholarship to students enrolled in or currently pursuing college coursework consistent with a degree in string music performance. Applicants must submit a sampler performance on CD. Range of scholarships is $1,000 to $1,100. Download the application.
  • Kylen C. Bares Memorial Scholarship Fund memorializes Kylen C. Bares, son of Madge and Steven Bares, who was involved in a tragic car accident. The Fund was established to assist at least one student annually from the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering or a Memphis City Schools high school. Past awards: $1,200 to $1,500.  Download the application.
  • Community Scholarship Fund offers a one-year college scholarship for students living in the Memphis metropolitan area. Students must be involved in the community through volunteer activities with a nonprofit or community group. Past awards: is $1,000 to $2,000. Download the application
  • Mildred Galloway Scholarship Fund was established for graduating high school seniors whose study is in the area of family and consumer sciences. Past awards: $1,500. Download the application.
  • Ruby Holmes Hefley Scholarship Fund was established for the children of parents with disabilities. Applicant must have a parent or legal guardian who is receiving Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income. Past awards: $500 to $1,200. Download the application.
  • James A. Hyter Vocal Music Scholarship Fund is for applicants who will pursue a vocal music degree. Applicants will be invited to a vocal audition. Those chosen for the audition should be prepared to perform three musical selections. Past awards: $1,000 to $2,000. Download the application.
  • Indian Community of Memphis Scholarship Fund was established by the Indian community of Memphis to give back to Memphis by providing aid to students who are in need of financial assistance for college. Students must be seniors graduating from Booker T. Washington, Central, East, Frayser, Kirby, Overton or Whitehaven High Schools. Past awards: $500 to $2,500. Download the application.
  • Harold & Ida Jamison Scholarship Fund supports African-American graduating seniors from Booker T. Washington High School or Metropolitan Baptist Church in Memphis. The fund was established in memory of Harold and Ida Jamison, who graduated from Booker T. Washington and were members of Metropolitan Baptist Church. New scholarship fund. Download the application.
  • Allen Jones/Marjorie Barringer/BarKays Scholarship Fund memorializes Allen A. Jones, former producer and mentor of the BarKays. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from Memphis City Schools who plan to attend LeMoyne-Owen College or previous recipients attending LMOC. Past awards: $1,500 to $2,600.   • Kicklighter Family Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial support to graduates of Raleigh-Egypt High School to attend the public college, university or vocational school of their choice. Past awards: $1,000 to $1,500. Download the application.
  • Stephen Lowe Memorial Scholarship Fund memorializes Stephen Wayne Lowe, son of Paul and Sara Lowe, who was involved in a tragic car accident. Awards will be made to assist Bolton High School graduates and students who attend Faith Baptist Church. Past awards: $1,100 to $1,600. Download the application.
  • Edna Fant McConnell Scholarship for single mothers returning to school. The fund honors the example of Edna Fant McConnell who began a teaching career after returning to school as a single mother in the 1930s. The fund was established by her granddaughter Sarah Carpenter Ognibene, who also returned to school and began a new career as a single mother. New scholarship for 2013. Download the application.
  • The Original Fayette County Civic and Welfare League Scholarship Fund was established to help advance the educational opportunities of African-American students graduating from a public high school in Fayette County. New scholarship fund. Download the application.
  • Maxine A. Smith Scholarship Fund was established for graduating high school seniors who have participated in the NAACP's ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) Program. All scholarship recipients will be expected to attend a luncheon in their honor in late May or early June. Past awards: $1,000. Download the application.
  • Joseph W. Westbrook Melrose Scholarship Fund memorializes Joseph W. Westbrook, former Melrose High School teacher. The fund awards one scholarship annually to a Melrose High School student.  Past awards: $800 to $1,600. Download the application.
  • Sierra Simone Wright Scholarship Fund commemorates the life of Sierra Simone Wright, infant daughter of former Memphis Grizzlies player, the late Lorenzen Wright, and Sherra Wright. Students must be graduating seniors from Booker T. Washington High School, Lorenzen's alma mater, and must attend the University of Memphis. Past awards: $1,000 to $1,500. Download the application.

  • Don Poier Memorial Scholarship Fund is designed to assist well-rounded Memphis City Schools students who demonstrate strong character and are actively involved in school and the community. The Fund was created in memory of legendary Memphis Grizzlies broadcaster Don Poier. Past awards: $1,500 to 1,600. Download the application.
