Susan and David Schmidt 

Tell us a little about yourself.

The Schmidt family is made up of Walker (7), Patrick (10), Susan (Young), David (Wise).  Susan is the Executive Director of the Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at the University of Memphis.  David is a chef, working for Gordon Specialty Foods.  Patrick and Walker are Rock-Stars-in-Training at Campus School.

How did you hear about GiVE 365 and why did you join?

We heard from our friends at CFGM.  The idea of sharing a philanthropy experience with a great set of people seemed interesting!

Who do you think is doing great work in the city?

There are SO many agencies out there doing good work.  We are encouraged every day by the hard work and caring nature of the local nonprofit sector.

Favorite place in Memphis?

Jerry’s Sno Cones.  Heaven in a Styrofoam cup.

First memory of being involved in philanthropy?

I got a MATA bus pass for volunteering with the WONDERS series.  I was 14 and thought riding the bus to my volunteer gig would be stellar! 

And, of course – your favorite superhero?

Superman.  He's the only REAL superhero!!
