Ned and Karen Canty

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am the general director of Opera Memphis, beginning my first season in October. My wife Karen and I moved to Central Gardens in April.

How did you hear about GiVE 365 and why did you join?

My Director of Development Christiana Leibovich told me about it. I joined because it seemed like a good way to jump headfirst into the life of the city.

Who do you think is doing great work in the city?

I've been very impressed by Crosstown Arts. I think they have a big vision, and I hope to be a part of fulfilling it.

Favorite place in Memphis?

That's a tough one. I think our front porch might take it, but I am a big fan of Otherlands Coffee. Being there always helps me get focused and excited about making art.

First memory of being involved in philanthropy?

My parents were very good at ensuring we gave time, even when we were young. I remember going on a Saturday to help nuns move furniture. I was too young to be really helpful, but I knew I was supposed to try.

And, of course – your favorite superhero?

Will I seem to nerdy if I say the main character from Matt Wagner's Mage series from the 80s? Too nerdy? Ummm..how about Night Owl from The Watchmen? Still too nerdy? Okay...um...Batman. (But the Batman from Miller's seminal "Dark Knight" series.) Sorry, I'm a nerd.
