Tell us a little about Legacy Wealth Management.
Since 1982, Legacy Wealth Management has focused on helping clients reach their financial goals by integrating comprehensive financial planning and portfolio management services. We focus on all aspects that influence their financial lives such as portfolio management, tax planning, estate planning, cash-flow planning, insurance, retirement planning, stock option strategies, education planning, and charitable planning as well as managing downside risk. Our investment professionals, including 15 CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioners, work in teams to provide ongoing client support in an effort to sustain long-term relationships.
How did your company get involved with GiVE 365?
Our clients and our employees are very interested in giving back to the community. Couple that interest with the financial planning work that we do with our clients and the result has been a long-standing relationship with the Community Foundation. Several of the younger employees were looking for opportunities to get involved in charities around town and took Community Foundation president Bob Fockler to lunch. How can you find out what different groups are doing in town? How do you discern a well-run charity from one that is not? How do you get involved in a meaningful way? Bob described the new concept of GiVE 365 that the Community Foundation was working on at the time and it sounded like a perfect way to get involved and answer the questions we were asking him. We jumped in with both feet when GiVE 365 kicked off several months later.
In addition to membership, how have your employees been involved with GiVE 365?
Our employees have been active participants in all stages of the process, from the grant reviews, the steering committee, and the events committee to being ambassadors for the program to help spread the word around town and help the program grow. Legacy Wealth Management has supported employee involvement through a company matching program for employee donations, and we have used our connections to other businesses in the community to encourage them to do the same. Our employees are excited to pool their dollars with other GiVE 365 members so they can make a bigger difference with their giving. Giving them the ability to leverage those dollars with an employer match makes it even better!
What do you think Memphis needs to effect positive change?
Engagement. Memphis, like any community, faces many different challenges and therefore has to bring many different solutions to the table. Education, job skills, the arts, and so many other areas are critically important to moving this city forward. GiVE 365 provides a window into our city that provides most people with a view of those problems and the potential solutions that they don’t have in their everyday life. People can connect, find areas of common interest, and then get engaged to work together toward solutions. The interest in and growth of GiVE 365 proves that people want to effect positive change in Memphis.
What would you like to tell other companies that are considering supporting GiVE 365?
Get engaged and find ways to encourage your employees to do the same. The employer matching grant is one way to do it that allows you and your employees to leverage the amount given. Legacy Wealth Management gives employees one day off per year for community service that could be used to help out a GiVE 365 grant recipient. You could sponsor an event for GiVE 365. Lead by example and join GiVE 365 yourself – there’s no age limit!
